In-Depth Guide

How to use — The MealDB Recipe Finder

This tool searches The MealDB recipe database so you can quickly discover recipes by cuisine, name, and view full ingredients, step-by-step instructions, and video links.

How to use

  1. Choose a cuisine
Use the Filter by Cuisine dropdown to focus on a regional cuisine (e.g. Italian, Thai). If no cuisine is selected, results may be broad.
  2. Or search by name
Type a dish name or keyword in the Search by Name field and press Enter or click the Search button to find matching recipes.
  3. Browse results
Click any meal in the results list to open its detail card — you’ll see category, area (origin), ingredients, measurements and step-by-step instructions.
  4. Watch recipe videos
If a video link is available on the recipe card, click Watch Video Recipe to view a demonstration or walkthrough.
  5. Refine & repeat
Combine filters and search terms (or try different cuisines) to narrow results until you find a recipe you like.

Typical use cases

  • Quick meal ideas: Find dinner inspiration by cuisine or keyword when you don’t know what to cook.
  • Ingredient-driven search: Locate recipes if you know a key ingredient or want meals from a specific region.
  • Step-by-step guidance: Use the instructions and video links to follow along while cooking.
  • Explore new cuisines: Browse area/cuisine filters to discover dishes from around the world.

Key factors & tips

  • Search keywords: Use short, specific keywords (e.g., "chicken curry", "tiramisu") to get more relevant matches.
  • Cuisine selection: Selecting a cuisine first helps focus results and reduces “no meals found” outcomes for niche searches.
  • Video availability: Not every recipe has a video link — check the recipe card for a video button where present.
  • Ingredient lists: Recipe detail shows measured ingredients — review these before you begin to ensure you have everything.
  • Network/API status: The tool relies on The MealDB API — if the page shows loading errors or “No meals found,” try again later or adjust your filters.

Frequently asked questions

What does this tool search?

It searches The MealDB public database to return recipes, ingredient lists, instructions, and video links (when available).

Why do I sometimes see “No meals found”?

This happens when the selected cuisine has no matching recipes for your query or if the external API is unavailable. Try changing or removing the filter, or use a broader search term.

Can I filter by ingredient?

Use the search box for ingredient names (e.g., “garlic”, “chicken”). If the ingredient is common, combine it with a cuisine or keyword for better results.

Are recipe videos hosted here?

Video links (if present) point to external hosts referenced in The MealDB records — clicking them opens the external video source.

Is any data saved or shared?

No personal data is stored by the tool—searches are transient. The tool reads public recipe data from The MealDB API; it does not upload your inputs.

What should I do if the tool appears broken?

Use the page’s “Report Issue” form to notify the site owners, or try again later — outages are often caused by upstream API errors or temporary network problems.
