Learn how to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 or 11 to resolve performance issues and remove system bloat. This step-by-step guide covers everything from preparation and installation to your "Golden Setup.
Whether you are running Windows 10 or 11, sometimes a "reset" isn't enough. Here is how to wipe the slate clean, banish performance issues, and return your PC to "factory fresh" speed.
⚠️ CRITICAL: The Backup Golden Rule
A clean install erases everything on your system drive. Before you proceed, ensure your photos, documents, and game saves are backed up to an external drive or cloud service. If it's on the C: drive, it will be gone. Note: Your Windows 10 or 11 digital license is tied to your motherboard/Microsoft account, so it will reactivate automatically once you sign in.
Phase 1: Preparation
You cannot perform a clean install without the right tools. Do this while your current system is still functional.
- Get a USB Drive: You need an empty USB stick with at least 8GB of space.
- Download the Correct Tool:
- For Windows 11: Download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
- For Windows 10: Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
- Run the Tool: Open the file, accept the terms, select "Create installation media for another PC," and choose your USB flash drive. It will download the OS and turn the stick into a bootable installer.
Phase 2: The Installation
- Boot from USB: Restart your PC. As soon as the screen turns on, press the "Boot Menu" key (usually F12, F11, F10, or ESC depending on your motherboard) repeatedly. Select your USB drive from the list.
- The Setup Screen: Follow the initial prompts (language/keyboard). Click "Install Now." If asked for a product key, click "I don't have a product key" (Windows will reactivate automatically later).
- Choose "Custom": When asked what type of installation you want, select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
- Format the Drive: You will see your drive partitions. Delete them one by one until you have a single "Unallocated Space" drive. Click that, and hit "Next." Windows 10/11 will handle the rest.
Phase 3: The "Golden Setup"
Once you reach the desktop, your PC is fast, but it's not optimized yet. Follow this sequence:
1. Windows Updates
Run Windows Update repeatedly until there are no more updates. This installs most of your basic hardware drivers automatically.
2. GPU Drivers
Don't rely on Windows Update for your graphics card. Go directly to NVIDIA or AMD's website to download the latest driver.
